Grottesca

Carolina d'Ayala Valva is coming to San Francisco to teach her famous Italian Grottesca painting techniques. This charming style of decoration was born in Renaissance Italy, and can be adapted to fit any size or shape of space, decorate furniture, or used to make beautiful art panels. Carolina will be teaching her method using traditional egg tempera paints. Each artist will paint their own candelabra (tall vertical) panel of 25" wide by 63" tall, on specially prepared canvas.

    Class work includes:

  • introduction about the history of Grottesca painting, styles, elements
  • demonstration of canvas preparation
  • Making of egg tempera paint
  • creating a balanced color palette
  • Theory and practice of Carolina's "Three-Step Method"
  • brushwork and finishing techniques

Includes substrate, pigments, and all materials used in class, and a set of quality artists brushes.

Lynne Rutter Studio occasionally hosts decorative painting classes and specialized workshops on the finer points of decorative art, gilding, murals, and finishing, taught hands-on by established, practicing artists in a spacious working atelier. Classes emphasize traditional techniques and materials and practical methods.
