UPCOMING CLASSES

In this intensive 3 day workshop, learn numerous techniques for gilding and decorating objects and furniture with Chinoiserie, an enduring and popular form of ornamenting furniture since the 17th century. This class takes a practical approach to designing and gilding in the Chinoiserie style, by emphasizing an understanding of materials, proper preparation, application, and finishing techniques.
Each participating artist will complete a dazzling class project from a selection of designs incorporating gilding, Chinoiserie ornament, and painting, according to their level of experience.

• Appropriate and effective choices of materials, both historic and modern.
• Techniques for making historically accurate paint from raw pigments like cinnabar
• Demonstrations for making and using traditional materials including rabbit skin glue, gesso, and shellac.
• Mordant or “oil” gilding, using genuine gold leaf and composition metal leaf.
• Raised gilding techniques, both historic and modern
• Making and using gold paints
• Flash gilding techniques
• Antiquing and finishing techniques for gilded and painted surfaces.
